According to the National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation; even in red states, smarter people don't hunt, fish, or watch cars run laps… But in my experience, this is a lot more of a regional thing. A smart guy in Kansas or Wyoming is a lot more likely to hunt than a dumb guy in New York City. Alaska is a special case. Hunting is more of an integral activity for Alaskan kids and adults. It's the low IQ Alaskans who don't hunt.
Several other surveys show that anti-hunting mentalities follow a person’s level of education. The more educated a person is, the more prone they are to oppose hunting.
The American Time Use Survey (ATUS) collects information on how, where, and with whom Americans spend their time, providing data on a full range of activities. This Spotlight uses data from the ATUS to examine participation and time spent in sports and exercise activities.

The findings of the ATUS are people with higher levels of education were more likely to participate in sports and exercise. In 2009 to 2015, among people aged 25 years and older, those with a bachelor’s degree or higher were more than twice as likely to participate in sports and exercise activities on an average day than were those with a high school diploma or less—24.3 percent, compared with 12.0 percent for those with a high school diploma and 11.3 percent for those with less than a high school diploma.
A few questions should be investigated:
A few questions should be investigated:
- Are we losing educated people to "sports"?
- Why are they drawn to "sports"?
- How could we make hunting more appealing to the sport-loving demography? (Not just with school programs, which are controversial; but outside of schools).
- Why are educated people prone to oppose hunting?
